Universiteti i Shkodrës "Luigj Gurakuqi"

University of Shkodra "Luigj Gurakuqi" is one of the oldest and most important institutions of higher education in Albania. It was originally founded in 1957 as the High Pedagogical Institute of Shkodra, offering two-year study programs focused primarily on teacher training for the 8-year school system. Over the years, the institute trained and graduated more than 9,500 teachers by 1991.

In 1989, the institution was renamed in honor of Luigj Gurakuqi, a prominent figure in Albanian history, known for his contributions to education, culture, and the national awakening. Following Albania’s democratic transition in the early 1990s, the institute was granted full university status, becoming the University of Shkodra "Luigj Gurakuqi".

Today, the university has evolved into a modern institution with 6 faculties and 21 departments, offering a wide range of study programs across bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. It has played a vital role in shaping the intellectual and professional landscape of northern Albania and continues to contribute significantly to academic research and development.

The university places strong emphasis on international cooperation and academic exchange, engaging in various partnerships with regional and European universities. A recent example is its collaboration agreement signed with the University of Prishtina "Hasan Prishtina" in April 2024, aimed at strengthening academic ties, joint research projects, and student engagement.
